From May 29 to 31, 2024, and June 5 to 7, 2024, DSSHA-Nepal conducted a comprehensive training program for Parents and Caregivers of children with Down Syndrome at Frontline Hospital, Old Baneshwor, Kathmandu, supported by Kathmandu Metropolitan City Group. Thirty-two participants were divided into two groups of sixteen, covering a wide range of topics essential for caregiving, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, emergency first aid, genetics, special education, psychological issues, orthopedic concerns, eye conditions, endocrine disorders, dental care, and ear, nose, and throat issues. The program included pre- and post-tests, daily evaluations, and feedback sessions to enhance future training effectiveness.
During the training, Mr. Ashish Joshi, a person with Down Syndrome, delivered both opening and closing remarks and actively volunteered throughout the sessions. Notably, Miss Grisma Pant, also with Down Syndrome, participated enthusiastically in the June 6, 2024, session of Group 2 training. The program emphasized the theme of “Enhancing Skills and Knowledge of Parents, Aiming Towards a Dignified Future for Their Children.” The final day featured sessions on special education and psychology, which were highly informative and well-received by both parents and trainers, who expressed eagerness for further learning. Mr. Krishna Nepali, CDOO of Frontline Hospital, pledged comprehensive support for children with Down Syndrome and their parents as needed.
